And now on to today's post.

I have often heard the phrase "Catholic guilt" thrown around, both seriously and jokingly, by Catholics and non-Catholics alike. I realized when I became Catholic, though, that Catholics only need to feel guilty for one thing: unconfessed sin. Guilt is healthy when it is the tool of a well-formed conscience to get you to contrition, repentance, and absolution.

Sin, which destroys our soul, shatters our relationship with God, and damages other people, is the one thing worth feeling guilty over. I know it can be difficult to discern in some cases what is and is not sin, but forming your conscience with the help of a spiritual director is worth the time and effort.

While guilt over sin is the only kind we should worry about, most of us spend our lives wracked with guilt over silly things.  The world makes us feel guilty far more than the Church, either by distorting its message or holding us to its own wildly fluctuating standards.  When there are no moral absolutes, many people who preach that "everyone has their own truth" start believing themselves to be the makers of truth. At least, that's what the internet, where everyone is an expert, would lead you to believe.

So the next time you start feeling guilty for something, especially after spending time on the web, ask yourself, "Is it a sin?" If so, make a resolution to confess it. If not,  go back to living your life unshackled by unnessary guilt. It's freeing.

Thinking your kids are really cute

To start you off, here's some things you don't have to feel guilty for:
-Making different parenting choices than other people
-Eating carbs
-Putting off the laundry to play outside
-Defining success as more than fame and fortune
-Singing "Let it Go" even when your kids aren't around
-Not liking the song "Let it Go"
-Enjoying time to yourself
-Being a homemaker
-Working to support your family
-Watching Pride and Prejudice. . . for the twentieth time
-Not finishing that scrapbook you started two years ago
-Never "getting your pre-baby body back"
-Liking the Internet
Loving to shop
-Your dress size
-Drinking a beer with your chicken nuggets
-Not understanding modern art
-Listening to the same music you listened to in high school
-Taking all those personality quizzes
-Having a personality
-Having your own style
-Enjoying silly TV shows
-Re-reading an old favorite instead of picking up a new book
-Wearing a cute outfit, even though it's going to be covered in yogurt
-Wearing the same outfit every Wednesday
-Not posting on your blog often enough
-Posting on your blog even though most of the people who read it are related to you

Today is: a gloriously beautiful day in the month of Our Lady
Finn is: going to be 3 in two months. Holy Cow, Batman.
Gigi is: So Big ( and she can reach up in the air to prove it.)
Mama is reading: nothing longer than an article since my nursing/reading time went away
